✧ Qays ibn ʿĀṣim, al-Zibriqān ibn Badr, and ʿAmr ibn al-Ahtam, the Tamīmīs, sat with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Al-Zibriqān boasted and said: “O Messenger of Allah, I am the chief of Tamīm, obeyed among them, and followed among them. I protect them from injustice and take their rights for them, and this one knows that—meaning ʿAmr ibn al-Ahtam.” ʿAmr ibn al-Ahtam said: “By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, he is sharp-tongued, protective of his side, and obeyed in his assembly.” Al-Zibriqān said: “By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, he knows about me other than what he said, and nothing prevented him from speaking it except envy.” ʿAmr said: “I envy you? By Allah, you are of vile maternal uncle, newly rich, foolish in your origins, and negligent toward your kinsfolk. By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I spoke the truth in what I said first, and I did not lie in what I said last. But I am a man who was pleased, so I said the best of what I knew, and I became angry, so I said the worst of what I found. By Allah, you spoke the truth in both matters.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “Indeed, some eloquence is sorcery; indeed, some eloquence is sorcery.” It has been narrated from Abū Bakrah al-Anṣārī that he attended this gathering.
