✧ I said to a client of Ibn ʿUmar: How was the death of Ibn ʿUmar? He said: He disapproved of al-Ḥajjāj b. Yūsuf's actions in killing Ibn al-Zubayr, so he stood up to him and made him hear it. Al-Ḥajjāj said: Be silent, O old man, you have become senile. When they dispersed, al-Ḥajjāj ordered a man from the people of Syria, and he struck him with his spear on his leg. Then al-Ḥajjāj entered to visit him and said: If I knew who struck you, I would strike his neck. He said: "You are the one who struck me." He said: How? He said: "On the day you brought weapons into the sanctuary of Allah."
