حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ الْمُزَكِّي ثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ ثَنَا الزُّبَيْرُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الزُّهْرِيُّ قَالَ

قَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ وَعِنْدَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَزْهَرَ مَنْ لِي لِمَخْرَمَةَ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ يَنْصِفُنِي مِنْ لِسَانِهِ تَنَقُّصًا؟ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَزْهَرَ أَنَا أَكْفِيَكَهُ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ مَخْرَمَةَ فَقَالَ جَعَلَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ يَتِيمًا فِي حِجْرِهِ يَزْعُمُ بِقُوتِهِ أَنَّهُ يَكْفِيهِ إِيَّايَ فَقَالَ لَهُ ابْنُ الْبَرْصَاءِ اللَّيْثِيُّ إِنَّهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَزْهَرَ فَرَفَعَ عَصًا فِي يَدِهِ وَضَرَبَهُ فَشَجَّهُ وَقَالَ «أَعَدُوُّنَا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ وَتَحْسِدُنَا فِي الْإِسْلَامِ وَتَدْخُلَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ ابْنِ الْأَزْهَرِ»

✧ Mu'awiya b. Abi Sufyan said, while 'Abd al-Rahman b. Azhar was with him, "Who will deal with Makhrama b. Nawfal for me, to give me justice from his tongue's disparagement?" 'Abd al-Rahman b. Azhar said to him, "I will suffice you against him." That reached Makhrama, and he said, "'Abd al-Rahman has made me an orphan in his care, claiming by his strength that he can suffice against me." Ibn al-Barsa' al-Laythi said to him, "He is 'Abd al-Rahman b. Azhar." So he raised a stick in his hand and struck him, splitting his head, and said, "Our enemy in the Jahiliyya, and you envy us in Islam, and you come between me and Ibn al-Azhar."
