✧ On the day of al-Qadisiyyah, al-Mughirah b. Shu'bah was sent to the ruler of Persia. He said, "They sent ten men with me, and they were sent. He tightened his garments, took a shield, and set off until they reached him." He said, "Throw me a shield," and he sat on it. The 'ilj said, "You Arabs, we know what has brought you to us. You are a people who cannot find enough food in your lands to satisfy yourselves, so take, for we will give you the food you need. We are Magians, and we dislike killing you, for you defile our land for us." Al-Mughirah said, "By Allah, that is not what brought us. We were a people who worshiped stones and idols; when we saw a stone better than another, we threw it away and took another, and we did not know a Lord until Allah sent to us a messenger from among ourselves. He called us to Islam, and we followed him. We did not come for food. We have been commanded to fight our enemy among those who have abandoned Islam. We did not come for food, but we came to kill your warriors and take your offspring captive. As for what you mentioned about food, by my life, we do not find food to satisfy ourselves, and sometimes we do not even find enough water to quench our thirst. So we came to this land of yours and found abundant food and abundant water. By Allah, we will not leave it until it is ours or yours." The 'ilj said in Persian, "He has spoken the truth." He said, "And your eye will be gouged out." His eye was gouged out the next day; an arrow struck him. "Gharib, sahih al-isnad, but they did not record it." Sahih.
