✧ We were sitting at the small gate that is in the mosque, meaning the gate of Ghaylan: Abu Bakra, his brother Nafi, and Shibl b. Ma'bad. Al-Mughira b. Shuba came walking in the shade of the mosque, and the mosque at that time was made of reeds. He came to Abu Bakra and greeted him. Abu Bakra said to him: "O governor, what brought you out of the governor's residence?" He said: "I came to talk with you." Abu Bakra said to him: "That is not for you. The governor sits in his house and sends for whomever he wishes and talks with them." He said: "O Abu Bakra, there is no harm in what I do." So he entered through the smaller gate and went on until he came to the door of Umm Jamil, a woman from Qays. He said: Between the house of Abu Abdullah and the woman's house there was a road. He entered upon her. Abu Bakra said: "I have no patience for this." So he sent for a servant of his and said to him: "Climb up to my room and look from the window." The servant went, looked, and before long returned and said: "I found them under one blanket." Abu Bakra said to the people: "Get up with me." They got up. Abu Bakra began by looking, and he said: "To Allah we belong and to Him we return." Then he said to his brother: "Look." He looked and said: "What did you see?" He replied: "I saw adultery." Then he said: "What raised your suspicion? Look." He looked and said: "What did you see?" He replied: "I saw adultery by a married person." He said: "I call Allah as witness over you." They said: "Yes." He said: Then he went back to his family and wrote to Umar b. al-Khattab about what he had seen. A terrible matter came to him: a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Before long, he sent Abu Musa al-Ashari as governor of Basra. Abu Musa sent to al-Mughira: "Stay for three days during which you are your own governor. On the fourth day, set out, you and Abu Bakra and his witnesses. How fortunate for you if you were lied about, and woe to you if you were truthfully reported." So the people set out: Abu Bakra and his witnesses and al-Mughira b. Shuba until they came to Madinah to the Commander of the Faithful. He said: "Bring what you have, O Abu Bakra." He said: "I bear witness that I saw adultery by a married person." Then they brought forward Abu Abdullah, his brother, and he testified, saying: "I bear witness that I saw adultery by a married person." Then they brought forward Shibl b. Ma'bad al-Bajali, and he asked him, and he testified likewise. Then they brought forward Ziyad, and he said: "What did you see?" He said: "I saw them under a blanket, and I heard heavy breathing. I do not know what was beyond that." Umar said "Allahu Akbar" and rejoiced that al-Mughira was saved. He flogged the people except Ziyad. He said: The Commander of the Faithful Umar b. al-Khattab had appointed Utba b. Ghazwan over Basra. He arrived there in the year sixteen, and his death was in the year nineteen. Utba disliked that and prayed to Allah to relieve him of it. He fell from his mount on the road and died, may Allah have mercy on him. Then what happened with al-Mughira happened.
