✧ I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the beginning of his mission while he was in Makkah, and he was then in hiding. I said, "What are you?" He said, "I am a prophet." I said, "And what is a prophet?" He said, "A messenger of Allah." I said, "Did Allah send you?" He said, "Yes." I said, "With what did He send you?" He said, "To worship Allah, to break the idols and the religions, and to maintain ties of kinship." I said, "Excellent is what He sent you with." I said, "Then who follows you in this?" He said, "A slave and a free man," meaning Abu Bakr and Bilal. 'Amr used to say: "I saw myself as a quarter or the fourth of Islam." He said: "So I accepted Islam. I said, 'Shall I follow you, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'No, but join your people, and when you are informed that I have come forth, then follow me.'" He said: "So I joined my people and began to await his news and his coming forth, until a caravan from Yathrib came. I met them and asked them about the news. They said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has come forth from Makkah to Madinah.' I said, 'And has he reached it?' They said, 'Yes.'" He said: "So I set out until I came to him. I said, 'Do you recognize me, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'Yes, you are the man who came to me in Makkah.' So I began to seek a private moment with him. When he was alone, I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me of what Allah has taught you, and be concise.' He said, 'Ask about whatever you wish.' I said, 'Which part of the night is most heard?' He said, 'The last part of the night, so pray as much as you wish, for the prayer is witnessed and written until you pray the morning prayer. Then stop until the sun rises and is raised a spear's length or two spear's lengths, for it rises between the two horns of a devil, and the disbelievers pray to it. Then pray as much as you wish, for the prayer is witnessed and written until the spear's shadow equals its length. Then stop, for Hell is stoked and its gates are opened. Then when the sun declines, pray as much as you wish, for the prayer is witnessed and written, until you pray the 'Asr prayer. Then stop until the sun sets, for it sets between the two horns of a devil, and the disbelievers pray to it. And when you perform ablution, wash your hands, for when you wash your hands, your sins depart from your forearms. Then when you wipe your head, your sins depart from the ends of your hair. Then when you wash your feet, your sins depart from your feet. Then if you remain in your sitting, you will have a portion of your ablution, and if you stand and remember your Lord, praise Him, and pray two rak'ahs with your heart attentive to them, you will be free of your sins as on the day your mother gave birth to you.'" He said: "I said, 'O 'Amr, know what you are saying, for you are saying something great.' He said, 'By Allah, my age has advanced and my term has drawn near, and I have no need to lie. If I had heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ only once or twice, I would not have narrated it, but I have heard it more than that.' Thus Abu Sallam narrated to me from him, from Abu Umamah, except that I may make a mistake or add something, so I seek Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him. Muslim has transmitted some of these words from the hadith of al-Nadr b. Muhammad al-Jurashi, from 'Ikrimah b. 'Ammar, from Shaddad b. 'Abdullah, from Abu Umamah. He said: 'Amr b. 'Abasah said: And this hadith of al-'Abbas b. Salim is more complete and perfect than the hadith of 'Ikrimah b. 'Ammar.
