✧ Umar b. al-Khattab proposed to Umm Aban bt. Utba b. Rabi'a b. Abd Shams, and she refused him. It was said to her, "Why?" She said, "If he enters, he enters with harshness, and if he goes out, he goes out with harshness. The affair of his hereafter has distracted him from the affair of his world, as if he were looking at his Lord with his two eyes." Then al-Zubayr b. al-Awwam proposed, and she refused him. It was said to her, "Why?" She said, "His wife has no say from him in her hair extensions." Then Ali proposed to her, and she refused. It was said to her, "Why?" She said, "His wife has nothing from him except the fulfillment of his need, and he says 'such and such' and 'it was and it was.'" Then Talha proposed to her, and she said, "A husband indeed." They said, "How is that?" She said, "I know his character. If he enters, he enters laughing, and if he goes out, he goes out smiling. If I ask, he gives, and if I am silent, he initiates. If I work, he thanks, and if I sin, he forgives." When he consummated the marriage with her, Ali said, "O Abu Muhammad, will you permit me to speak to Umm Aban?" He said, "Speak to her." He said: He took hold of the curtain of the bridal canopy, then said, "Peace be upon you, O one who holds herself dear." She said, "And upon you be peace." He said, "The Commander of the Believers proposed to you and you refused him." She said, "That happened." He said, "Al-Zubayr, the cousin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and one of his disciples, proposed to you and you refused." She said, "And that happened." He said, "I proposed to you, with my kinship to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and you refused." She said, "And that happened." He said, "By Allah, you have married the most handsome of us and the most open-handed of us. He gives like this and like this."
