كَمَا حَدَّثَنَا بِهِ الثِّقَةُ الْمَأْمُونُ أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ عُلَيَّةَ بْنِ خَالِدٍ السَّكُونِيُّ بِالْكُوفَةِ مِنْ أَصْلِ كِتَابِهِ ثنا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ الْعَامِرِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ دُبَيْسٍ وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ أَبَانَ بْنِ صَالِحٍ قَالَا ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ الْبَصْرِيُّ الْقَصَّارُ ثنا ثَابِتٌ الْبُنَانِيُّ

أَنَّ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ كَانَ شَاكِيًا فَأَتَاهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ يَعُودُهُ فِي أَصْحَابٍ لَهُ فَجَرَى الْحَدِيثُ حَتَّى ذَكَرُوا عَلِيًّا فَتَنَقَّصَهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ فَقَالَ أَنَسٌ مَنْ هَذَا؟ أَقْعِدُونِي فَأَقْعَدُوهُ فَقَالَ يَا ابْنَ الْحَجَّاجِ أَلَا أَرَاكَ تَنْقُصُ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَ مُحَمَّدًا ﷺ بِالْحَقِّ لَقَدْ كُنْتُ خَادِمَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ وَكَانَ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ يَخْدُمُ بَيْنَ يَدِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ غُلَامٌ مِنْ أَبْنَاءِ الْأَنْصَارِ فَكَانَ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمُ يَوْمِي فَجَاءَتْ أُمُّ أَيْمَنَ مَوْلَاةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِطَيْرٍ فَوَضَعْتُهُ بَيْنَ يَدِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «يَا أُمَّ أَيْمَنَ مَا هَذَا الطَّائِرُ؟» قَالَتْ هَذَا الطَّائِرُ أَصَبْتُهُ فَصَنَعْتُهُ لَكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «اللَّهُمَّ جِئْنِي بِأَحَبِّ خَلْقِكَ إِلَيْكَ وَإِلَيَّ يَأْكُلُ مَعِي مِنْ هَذَا الطَّائِرِ» وَضَرَبَ الْبَابَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «يَا أَنَسُ انْظُرْ مَنْ عَلَى الْبَابِ» قُلْتُ اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَذَهَبْتُ فَإِذَا عَلِيٌّ بِالْبَابِ قُلْتُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى حَاجَةٍ فَجِئْتُ حَتَّى قُمْتُ مِنْ مَقَامِي فَلَمْ أَلْبَثْ أَنْ ضَرَبَ الْبَابَ فَقَالَ «يَا أَنَسُ انْظُرْ مَنْ عَلَى الْبَابِ» فَقُلْتُ اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَذَهَبْتُ فَإِذَا عَلِيٌّ بِالْبَابِ قُلْتُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى حَاجَةٍ فَجِئْتُ حَتَّى قُمْتُ مَقَامِي فَلَمْ أَلْبَثْ أَنْ ضَرَبَ الْبَابَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «يَا أَنَسُ اذْهَبْ فَأَدْخِلْهُ فَلَسْتَ بِأَوَّلِ رَجُلٍ أَحَبَّ قَوْمَهُ لَيْسَ هُوَ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ» فَذَهَبْتُ فَأَدْخَلْتُهُ فَقَالَ «يَا أَنَسُ قَرِّبْ إِلَيْهِ الطَّيْرَ» قَالَ فَوَضَعْتُهُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَكَلَا جَمِيعًا قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ يَا أَنَسُ كَانَ هَذَا بِمَحْضَرٍ مِنْكَ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ «أُعْطِي بِاللَّهِ عَهْدًا أَلَّا أَنْتَقِصَ عَلِيًّا بَعْدَ مَقَامِي هَذَا وَلَا أَعْلَمُ أَحَدًا يَنْتَقِصُهُ إِلَّا أَشْنَبَ لَهُ وَجْهَهُ» إبراهيم بن ثابت ساقط

✧ Anas b. Malik was ill, and Muhammad b. al-Hajjaj came to visit him with some companions. The conversation turned to 'Ali, and Muhammad b. al-Hajjaj belittled him. Anas said: "Who is this? Sit me up." They sat him up, and he said: "O Ibn al-Hajjaj, do I see you belittling 'Ali b. Abi Talib? By the One who sent Muhammad ﷺ with the truth, I was the servant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ before him, and each day a boy from the sons of the Ansar served before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. That day was my turn, and Umm Ayman, the freedwoman of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, came with a bird and I placed it before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O Umm Ayman, what is this bird?' She said: 'This is a bird I caught and prepared for you.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O Allah, bring me the most beloved of Your creation to You and to me, to eat with me from this bird.' Then someone knocked at the door, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O Anas, see who is at the door.' I said: 'O Allah, make him a man from the Ansar.' I went, and there was 'Ali at the door. I said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is busy.' I came back and stood in my place. Soon he knocked again, and the Prophet said: 'O Anas, see who is at the door.' I said: 'O Allah, make him a man from the Ansar.' I went, and there was 'Ali at the door. I said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is busy.' I came back and stood in my place. Soon he knocked, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O Anas, go and let him in, for you are not the first man to love his people; he is not from the Ansar.' So I went and let him in. He said: 'O Anas, bring the bird near to him.' I placed it before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and they both ate." Muhammad b. al-Hajjaj said: "O Anas, was this in your presence?" He said: "Yes." He said: "I give a covenant by Allah that I will never belittle 'Ali after this sitting of mine, and I do not know anyone who belittles him except that I will show him his face (i.e., confront him)." Ibrahim b. Thabit is dropped.
