✧ I was sitting with Ibn 'Abbas when nine men came to him and said: "O Ibn 'Abbas, either you come with us, or you give us privacy from these people." Ibn 'Abbas said: "Rather, I will come with you." He said, while he was then healthy before he became blind. They began to talk, and we do not know what they said. Then he came shaking his garment and saying: "Uff and tuff! They have criticized a man who has more than ten virtues that no one else has. They criticized a man to whom the Prophet ﷺ said: 'I will send a man whom Allah will never disgrace, who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love.' So everyone present hoped for it. He said: 'Where is 'Ali?' They said: 'He is at the mill grinding.' He said: 'None of you would have ground.' He came with sore eyes, hardly able to see. He spat into his eyes, then shook the banner three times and gave it to him. Then 'Ali brought Safiyya bt. Huyayy." Ibn 'Abbas said: "Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent so-and-so with Surat al-Tawbah, then sent 'Ali after him and took it from him, saying: 'No one should take it except a man who is from me and I am from him.'" Ibn 'Abbas said: "And the Prophet ﷺ said to his cousins: 'Which of you will take me as a friend in this world and the Hereafter?' 'Ali was sitting with them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to a man among them and said: 'Which of you will take me as a friend in this world and the Hereafter?' They refused. Then he said to 'Ali: 'You are my friend in this world and the Hereafter.'" Ibn 'Abbas said: "And 'Ali was the first person to believe after Khadijah." He said: "And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took his garment and placed it over 'Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husayn, and said: {Indeed Allah intends only to remove from you the impurity, O People of the House, and to purify you with a thorough purification} [al-Ahzab 33]." Ibn 'Abbas said: "And 'Ali sold himself, so he wore the Prophet's ﷺ garment and slept in his place." Ibn 'Abbas said: "The polytheists were shooting at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Abu Bakr came while 'Ali was sleeping. Abu Bakr thought he was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he said: 'O Prophet of Allah.' 'Ali said to him: 'The Prophet of Allah ﷺ has gone toward the well of Maymun, so catch up with him.' Abu Bakr went and entered the cave with him." He said: "And 'Ali began throwing stones as the Prophet of Allah ﷺ used to be thrown at, and he was writhing, having wrapped his head in the garment, not taking it out until morning. Then he uncovered his head, and they said: 'You are indeed cowardly; your companion did not writhe when we threw at him, but you writhe, and we found that strange.'" Ibn 'Abbas said: "And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out on the expedition of Tabuk and went out with the people. 'Ali said to him: 'Should I go out with you?' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'No.' 'Ali wept, so he said to him: 'Are you not pleased that you are to me as Harun was to Musa, except that there is no prophet after me? It is not fitting that I should go except with you as my successor.'" Ibn 'Abbas said: "And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: 'You are the guardian of every believer after me, male and female.'" Ibn 'Abbas said: "And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ closed the doors of the mosque except for 'Ali's door, so he would enter the mosque in a state of major impurity, and it was his path, having no other path." Ibn 'Abbas said: "And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever's mawla I am, then 'Ali is his mawla.'" Ibn 'Abbas said: "And Allah ﷻ has informed us in the Qur'an that He was pleased with the Companions of the Tree, and He knew what was in their hearts. So has He informed us that He was displeased with them after that?" Ibn 'Abbas said: "And the Prophet of Allah ﷺ said to 'Umar when he said: 'Permit me to strike his neck.' He said: 'Would you do it? And what would make you know? Perhaps Allah has looked upon the people of Badr and said: Do what you wish.'"
