✧ Abu Lu'lu'a belonged to al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba, and he used to make millstones. Al-Mughira used to employ him every day for four dirhams. Abu Lu'lu'a met Umar and said, 'O Commander of the Faithful, al-Mughira has increased my burden. Speak to him to lighten it for me.' Umar said to him, 'Fear Allah and treat your master well.' He said, and Umar intended to meet al-Mughira and speak to him about lightening it. Abu Lu'lu'a became angry, and his name was Fayruz and he was a Christian. He said, 'His justice encompasses all people except me.' He became angry and resolved to kill him. He made a dagger with two heads, sharpened it, and poisoned it. Umar said the takbir. Umar would not say the takbir when the prayer was established until he spoke and said, 'Straighten your rows.' He came and stood in the row opposite him, next to Umar, in the dawn prayer. When the prayer was established, Umar spoke and said, 'Straighten your rows,' then said the takbir. When he said the takbir, he stabbed him in his shoulder, stabbed him in another place, and stabbed him in his side. Umar fell. He also stabbed thirteen men with him: seven of them recovered and six of them died. Umar was carried away, and the people were in commotion until the sun almost rose. Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf called out, 'O people, the prayer, the prayer!' They rushed to the prayer. Abd al-Rahman went forward and led them in prayer, reciting the two shortest surahs in the Quran. When he finished, the people turned to Umar ibn al-Khattab. He called for a drink to see the extent of his wound. Nabidh was brought and he drank it, and it came out of his wound, and it was not known whether it was blood or nabidh. Then he called for milk and it was brought and he drank it, and it came out of his wound. They said, 'No harm upon you, O Commander of the Faithful.' He said, 'If being killed is harm, then I have been killed.'
