✧ We traveled with Umar ibn al-Khattab on his last journey to Syria. When he approached it, he was informed that the plague was in it. It was said to him, 'O Commander of the Faithful, it is not appropriate for you to rush into it, just as if it had occurred while you were there, it would not be for you to leave it.' So he turned back toward Madinah. While we were traveling at night, he said to me, 'Turn off the road.' So he turned off and I turned off. He dismounted from his camel, then placed his head on the arm of his camel and slept, and I could not sleep. Then he went on saying to me, 'What is it with me and them? They turned me back from Syria.' Then he mounted, and I did not ask him about anything until I thought we were about to mingle with people. I said to him, 'Why did you say what you said when you woke from your sleep?' He said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Seventy thousand will be resurrected from between the wall of Hims and the olives in the red earth, upon whom there is no reckoning." If Allah returns me from this journey of mine, I will carry my family and my people and my wealth until I settle in Hims.' He returned from that journey and was killed, ؓ.
