✧ Umar ibn al-Khattab wrote to Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas: 'Take for the Muslims a place of emigration and a lodging for jihad.' Sa'd sent a man from the Ansar called al-Harith ibn Salama, and he chose for them the site of Kufa today. Sa'd settled there with the people and marked out our mosque and marked out the plots in it. Al-Sha'bi said: In Kufa there grew lavender, wormwood, oxeye daisies, and anemones. In the Jahiliyyah the Arabs used to call it Khadd al-Adhra (the virgin's cheek). They chose it and wrote to Umar ibn al-Khattab, and he wrote: 'Leave it.' So the people moved to Kufa. Al-Haytham ibn Adi is unreliable.
