✧ The narrator said: "Get up and pray with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Two men stood up, but Abu Jahsh refused to stand. Umar said to him, "Pray, O Abu Jahsh, with the Prophet ﷺ." He replied, "I will not stand until a man comes to me who is stronger in arm than I and harder in grip than I, so he throws me down and rubs my face in the dust." Umar said, "So I rose to him, and I was stronger in arm and harder in grip than him, and I threw him down and rubbed his face in the dust. Then Uthman came to me and held me back. Umar ibn al-Khattab went out angry until he reached the Prophet ﷺ. When the Prophet ﷺ saw him and saw the anger in his face, he said, 'What troubles you, O Abu Hafs?' He said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I came upon a group sitting at the door of the mosque while the prayer had been established, and among them was Abu Jahsh al-Laythi. The two men stood up,' and he repeated the story. Then Umar said, 'By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, Uthman's help to him was only because he hosted him one night and he wanted to repay that favor.' Uthman heard him and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, do you not hear what Umar says about us in your presence?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'If Umar is pleased, by the mercy of Allah, I would wish that you had brought me the head of the wicked one.' Umar got up, and when he had gone far, the Prophet ﷺ called him and said, 'Come here, O Umar, where did you intend to go?' He said, 'I intended to bring you the head of the wicked one.' He said, 'Sit down until I inform you of the self-sufficiency of the Lord from the prayer of Abu Jahsh al-Laythi. Indeed, Allah has in the lowest heaven angels in humility who do not raise their heads until the Hour is established. When the Hour is established, they raise their heads and say, "Our Lord, we have not worshipped You as You deserve to be worshipped."' Umar ibn al-Khattab said to him, 'And what do they say, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'As for the people of the lowest heaven, they say, "Glory be to the One with sovereignty and dominion." As for the people of the second heaven, they say, "Glory be to the Living who does not die." So say it, O Umar, in your prayer.' He said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what about what you taught me and commanded me to say in my prayer?' He said, 'Say this once and that once.' And what he had commanded him was to say, 'I seek refuge in Your pardon from Your punishment, and I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your wrath, and I seek refuge in You from You. Glorified be Your Face.'
