أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ الْقَاضِي ثنا الْحَارِثُ بْنُ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ ثنا أَبُو النَّضْرِ ثنا شَيْبَانُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ النَّحْوِيُّ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ زِرٍّ قَالَ

خَرَجْتُ مَعَ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ فِي يَوْمِ عِيدٍ فَرَأَيْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ يَمْشِي حَافِيًا شَيْخٌ أَصْلَعُ أَدَمُ أَعْسَرُ يُسْرٍ طُوَالًا مُشْرِفًا عَلَى النَّاسِ كَأَنَّهُ عَلَى دَابَّةٍ بِبُرْدٍ قَطَرِيٍّ يَقُولُ «عِبَادَ اللَّهِ هَاجِرُوا وَلَا تَهْجُرُوا وَلْيَتَّقِ أَحَدُكُمُ الْأَرْنَبَ يَخْذِفُهَا بِالْحَصَى أَوْ يَرْمِيهَا بِالْحَجَرِ فَيَأْكُلُهَا وَلَكِنْ لِيُذَكِّ لَكُمُ الْأَسَلُ الرِّمَاحُ وَالنَّبْلُ»

✧ I went out with the people of Madinah on a day of 'Id and saw 'Umar b. al-Khattab walking barefoot, an old man, bald, brown-skinned, left-handed, tall, towering over the people as if he were on a mount, wearing a Qatari cloak, saying: “O servants of Allah, emigrate and do not become like the Bedouins. Let one of you be wary of the rabbit which he kills by throwing pebbles or stones at it and then eats it. Rather, let the spear-points, lances, and arrows make it lawful for you.”
