✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, the orators of the Ansar stood up. Some of them began saying, 'O company of Muhajirun, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed a man from among you, he paired with him a man from among us. So we think that this matter should be undertaken by two men, one from you and one from us.' The orators of the Ansar followed one another in saying that. Then Zayd b. Thabit stood up and said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was from the Muhajirun, and the Imam should be from the Muhajirun, and we are his supporters as we were supporters of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' Then Abu Bakr stood up and said, 'May Allah reward you well, O company of Ansar, and make firm your speaker.' Then he said, 'But if you did otherwise, we would not have made peace with you.' Then Zayd b. Thabit took Abu Bakr by the hand and said, 'This is your companion, so give him allegiance.' Then they departed. When Abu Bakr sat on the pulpit, he looked into the faces of the people and did not see Ali. He asked about him, and some of the Ansar went and brought him. Abu Bakr said, 'Cousin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his son-in-law, did you intend to split the staff of the Muslims?' He said, 'No blame, O successor of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ,' and gave him allegiance. Then he did not see al-Zubayr b. al-Awwam, so he asked about him until they brought him. He said, 'Cousin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his disciple, did you intend to split the staff of the Muslims?' He said something similar: 'No blame, O successor of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ,' and they both gave him allegiance.
