✧ Four thousand guarded him every day and night. Al-Suddi said: Dawud had divided time into three days: one day to judge among the people, one day to devote himself to worship, and one day to devote himself to his wives. He had ninety-nine wives. In what he read of the scriptures, he found the excellence of Ibrahim, Ishaq, and Ya'qub. When he found that in what he read, he said, 'O Lord, I see that all good has been taken by my forefathers who were before me. Give me the like of what You gave them and do with me as You did with them.' Then Allah revealed to him: Your forefathers were tried with afflictions that you have not been tried with. Ibrahim was tried with the sacrifice of his son, Ishaq with the loss of his sight, and Ya'qub with his grief over Yusuf, and you have not been tried with any of that. He said, 'O Lord, try me with the like of what You tried them and give me the like of what You gave them.' Then Allah revealed to him: You will be tried, so beware. After that, he remained as long as Allah willed, when Satan came to him in the form of a dove of gold and landed between his legs while he was standing praying. He reached out his hand to take it, but it flew from the window. He watched where it landed and sent someone after it. Then he saw a woman bathing on her roof, one of the most beautiful of women in form. She glanced and saw him, so she let down her hair and covered herself with it. That increased his desire for her. He inquired about her and was told that she had a husband and that her husband was away at such-and-such a garrison. He sent to the commander of the garrison and ordered him to send the husband to such-and-such an enemy. He sent him, and he achieved victory. He kept sending him until he was killed on the third occasion. Then he married his wife. When he entered upon her, he had not stayed long before Allah sent two angels in human form. They asked to enter upon him and found him on his day of worship. The guards prevented them from entering, so they climbed over the wall into his prayer niche. He was unaware while praying when suddenly they were sitting before him. He was startled by them, and they said, 'Do not fear. We are two disputants; one of us has wronged the other, so judge between us with truth and do not be unjust.' He said, 'Do not fear,' and he mentioned the hadith at length concerning his acknowledgment of his sin. Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.
