حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثنا الْخَضِرُ بْنُ أَبَانَ الْهَاشِمِيُّ ثنا سَيَّارُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ ثنا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عِمْرَانَ الْجَوْنِيَّ يَقُولُ

مَرَّ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ بِدَيْرِ رَاهِبٍ فَنَادَاهُ يَا رَاهِبُ يَا رَاهِبُ قَالَ فَأَشْرَفَ عَلَيْهِ فَجَعَلَ عُمَرُ يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ وَيَبْكِي قَالَ فَقِيلَ لَهُ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مَا يُبْكِيكَ مِنْ هَذَا؟ قَالَ ذَكَرْتُ قَوْلَ اللَّهِ ﷻ فِي كِتَابِهِ {عَامِلَةٌ نَاصِبَةٌ تَصْلَى نَارًا حَامِيَةً تُسْقَى مِنْ عَيْنٍ آنِيَةٍ} [الغاشية 4] فَذَلِكَ الَّذِي أَبْكَانِي «هَذِهِ حِكَايَةٌ فِي وَقْتِهَا فَإِنَّ أَبَا عِمْرَانَ الْجَوْنِيَّ لَمْ يُدْرِكْ زَمَانَ عُمَرَ» الجوني لم يدرك عمر لكنها حكاية في موضعها

Translation

✧ ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb passed by a monk's monastery and called out, "O monk! O monk!" He said: So the monk looked down at him, and ʿUmar began to look at him and weep. He said: It was said to him, "O Commander of the Faithful, what makes you weep over this man?" He said, "I remembered the saying of Allah, Exalted is He, in His Book: {Laboring, exhausted, entering a blazing Fire, given to drink from a boiling spring} [88:3–5]. That is what made me weep." This is an anecdote in its proper place, for Abū ʿImrān al-Jawnī did not meet the time of ʿUmar. Al-Jawnī did not meet ʿUmar, but it is an anecdote in its proper place.
