✧ While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the expedition of Tabuk, and the heat had become intense, the people dispersed until I looked and saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was the closest of them to me. He said: I approached him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, tell me of a deed that will admit me into Paradise and distance me from the Fire." He said: "You have asked about a great matter, yet it is easy for whom Allah makes it easy: worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him, establish the prescribed prayers, give the obligatory zakat, and fast Ramadan." He said: "And if you wish, I will tell you of the gates of Paradise." I said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Fasting is a shield, charity extinguishes sin, and a man's standing in the depth of the night seeking the Face of Allah." He said: Then he recited this verse: {Their sides forsake their beds, calling upon their Lord in fear and hope, and from what We have provided them they spend} [Al-Sajdah 16]. He said: "And if you wish, I will tell you of the head of the matter, its pillar, and its highest peak." He said: I said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "As for the head of the matter, it is Islam; as for its pillar, it is prayer; and as for its highest peak, it is jihad in the way of Allah. And if you wish, I will tell you of the key to all of that." Then he fell silent. Then two riders appeared heading toward us, and I feared that they would distract him from my need. He said: I said, "What is it, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "He pointed with his finger to his mouth." He said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, will we be held accountable for what we say with our tongues?" He said: "May your mother be bereaved of you, O Ibn Jabal! Does anything cast people on their faces into Hell except the harvests of their tongues?" This is the wording of Jarir's hadith, and Abu Ishaq al-Fazari did not mention al-Hakam b. Utaybah in his hadith.
