✧ It was revealed concerning the Anṣār. When the date palms were harvested, the Anṣār would bring out from their gardens clusters of unripe dates and hang them at the top of two pillars in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the poor among the Muhājirūn would eat from them. One of them would deliberately insert a cluster of bad dates, thinking that it was permissible amid the abundance of clusters that were placed. So it was revealed concerning those who did that: {And do not aim toward the defective therefrom, spending [from that] while you would not take it [yourself] except with closed eyes} [Al-Baqarah 267]. He says: If it were gifted to you, you would not accept it except with embarrassment toward its owner, out of annoyance that he sent you what he had no need for. {And know that Allah is Free of need} [Al-Baqarah 267] of your charities, {and Praiseworthy} [Al-Baqarah 267].
