حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ الْآدَمِيُّ الْقَارِئُ بِبَغْدَادَ ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْهَاشِمِيُّ ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ وَأَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو نَصْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ الْفَقِيهُ بِبُخَارَى ثنا صَالِحُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَبِيبٍ الْحَافِظُ ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ قَالَا ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ أَنْبَأَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَوْنٍ عَنِ ابْنِ سِيرِينَ عَنْ أَبِي الْعَجْفَاءِ السُّلَمِيِّ قَالَ خَطَبَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ فَقَالَ
أَلَا لَا تُغَالُوا صَدَاقَ النِّسَاءِ فَإِنَّهَا لَوْ كَانَتْ مَكْرُمَةً فِي الدُّنْيَا أَوْ تَقْوَى عِنْدَ اللَّهِ كَانَ أَوْلَاكُمْ بِهَا وَأَحَقَّكُمْ بِهَا مُحَمَّدٌ ﷺ «مَا أَصْدَقَ امْرَأَةً مِنْ نِسَائِهِ أَكْثَرَ مِنِ اثْنَتَيْ عَشَرَةَ أُوقِيَّةً» وَإِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ لَيُغْلِي بِصَدَاقِ امْرَأَتِهِ حَتَّى يَكُونَ لَهَا عَدَاوَةٌ فِي نَفْسِهِ وَيَقُولُ قَدْ كُلِّفْتُ إِلَيْكِ عَرَقُ الْقِرْبَةِ

✧ Verily, do not go to excess in the dowers of women, for if it were a mark of honor in this world or piety before Allah, then the most deserving of it and the most entitled to it among you would be Muhammad ﷺ. He did not give as dower to any woman among his wives more than twelve uqiyyahs. And indeed one of you goes to excess in the dower of his wife until there is enmity in his heart against her, and he says, 'I have been burdened for you with the sweat of the water-skin.'
