✧ Indeed I know that you are a stone, you do not harm or benefit, and were it not that I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kiss you I would not kiss you. Then he kissed it. Ali b. Abi Talib said to him: Of course, O Commander of the Believers, it harms and benefits. He said: Then he said: By the Book of Allah, Blessed and Exalted. He said: And where is that in the Book of Allah? He said: Allah ﷻ said: {And when your Lord took from the children of Adam, from their loins, their progeny, and made them testify upon themselves: Am I not your Lord? They said: Yes} [Al-A'raf 172]. Allah created Adam and wiped his back, making them acknowledge that He is the Lord and they are the servants, and He took their covenants and pledges, wrote that on a parchment, and this Stone had two eyes and a tongue. He said to it: Open your mouth. He said: It opened its mouth, and He placed that parchment in it, and said: Bear witness on the Day of Resurrection for whoever comes to you with fulfillment. And I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "On the Day of Resurrection the Black Stone will be brought, and it will have an eloquent tongue, bearing witness with monotheism for whoever touches it." So, O Commander of the Believers, it harms and benefits. Umar said: I seek refuge with Allah from living among a people in which you are not, O Abu al-Hasan.
