✧ Two men from the People of the Book, one said to his companion: 'Let us go to this prophet.' He replied: 'He must not hear this, or he will have four eyes.' So they came to him and asked him about nine clear signs. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Do not associate anything with God, do not kill, do not steal, do not commit adultery, do not practice sorcery, do not consume usury, do not falsely accuse a chaste woman, do not flee from battle, and do not take an innocent person to a ruler to have him killed or destroyed. And upon you Jews in particular, do not transgress on the Sabbath.' They kissed his hands and feet and said: 'We bear witness that you are a prophet.' He said: 'What prevents you from following me?' They said: 'David prayed that there would never cease to be a prophet among his descendants, and we fear that if we follow you, the Jews will kill us!' Abu Dawud once said: 'And do not falsely accuse a chaste woman, or do not flee from battle.'

✧ I went early to Safwan b. 'Assal al-Muradi and he said: 'What brings you, O Zirr?' I said: 'Seeking knowledge.' He said: 'Shall I give you good news?' Abu Dawud said: Hammad b. Salama said: 'None of them said it, and he raised the hadith: The angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge, pleased with what he seeks.'

✧ I went early to Safwan b. 'Assal and said: 'Something has stirred in my mind about wiping over the leather socks. Have you heard anything from the Messenger of God ﷺ about that?' He said: 'We were with the Prophet ﷺ on a journey'—or 'traveling'—'and he commanded us to wipe over them for three days and their nights, from defecation, urination, and sleep, but not from major impurity.'

✧ Have you heard anything from the Messenger of God ﷺ about passionate love?' He said: 'Yes. We were with the Messenger of God ﷺ on a march or a raid, and a bedouin called him with a loud voice: "O Muhammad, O Muhammad, O Muhammad." It was said to him: "Woe to you, lower your voice, for you have been forbidden from raising the voice!" But he kept calling him like that, and the Prophet ﷺ answered him accordingly, saying: "Here I am." He said: "What do you think of a man who loves a people but has not yet caught up with them?" The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "A man is with the one he loves."'

✧ Safwan did not cease telling me until he mentioned the gate of repentance on the western side, its width forty years or a journey of forty years. It will not cease to be open until the sun rises from its direction. That is His saying: On the day when some of the signs of your Lord come, no soul will benefit from its faith if it had not believed before or earned good through its faith.
