✧ The enemies among the Jews [the cause of their enmity] Ibn Isḥāq said: On account of that the rabbis of the Jews showed enmity to the Messenger of God ﷺ, out of oppression, envy, and rancor, because of that with which God Most High distinguished the Arabs, namely His taking His Messenger from among them. And there joined them men from the Aws and the Khazraj who had persisted in their paganism; thus they were people of hypocrisy upon the religion of their fathers, namely polytheism and denial of the resurrection, except that Islam overpowered them by its emergence and their people's gathering around it. So they displayed Islam and took it as a shield from being killed, while they acted as hypocrites in secret. Their inclination was with the Jews, because of their denying the Prophet ﷺ and their rejecting Islam. The rabbis of the Jews were the ones who questioned the Messenger of God ﷺ and sought to trouble him, and brought him ambiguities so as to confound truth with falsehood. Thus the Qurʾān would descend concerning them regarding what they asked about, except for a few questions about the lawful and the unlawful which the Muslims asked about.

✧ The Islam of ʿAbd Allāh b. Salām [how he became Muslim]. Ibn Isḥāq said: Part of the account of ʿAbd Allāh b. Salām, as one of his family related to me from him and about his conversion when he became Muslim—he was a learned rabbi—he said: When I heard of the Messenger of God ﷺ, I recognized his description, his name, and the time for which we had been waiting, and I kept this secret and remained silent about it until the Messenger of God ﷺ arrived in Madinah. When he alighted at Qubāʾ among the Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf, a man came and announced his arrival while I was at the top of a date palm of mine, working on it, and my paternal aunt Khālidah bt. al-Ḥārith was sitting below me. When I heard the news of the arrival of the Messenger of God ﷺ, I exclaimed, 'Allāhu akbar!' My aunt said, when she heard my exclamation: 'May God thwart you! By God, if you had heard that Moses son of ʿImrān was coming, you would not have done more.' He said: I said to her, 'Aunt, by God, he is the brother of Moses son of ʿImrān, and upon his religion; he has been sent with what he was sent with.' He said: She said, 'O son of my brother, is he the prophet about whom we were told that he would be sent with the same breath as the Hour?' He said: I said to her, 'Yes.' He said: She said, 'Then it is he.' He said: Then I went out to the Messenger of God ﷺ and became Muslim, then returned to my household and commanded them, and they became Muslim.

✧ [His people deny him and do not follow him] He said: I concealed my Islam from the Jews. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said to him: O Messenger of Allah, the Jews are a people of slander, and I would like you to admit me into one of your houses and hide me from them, then ask them about me, so that they may tell you how I am among them before they learn of my Islam. For if they learn of it, they will slander me and find fault with me. He said: So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ admitted me into one of his houses, and they entered upon him and spoke with him and questioned him. Then he said to them: What sort of man is al-Ḥuṣayn b. Salām among you? They said: Our chief and the son of our chief, our rabbi and our scholar. He said: When they had finished their words, I came out upon them and said to them: O assembly of Jews, fear Allah and accept what he has brought you. For by Allah, you know that he is the Messenger of Allah; you find him written with you in the Torah by his name and description. I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I believe in him, and I affirm him, and I know him. They said: You have lied. Then they fell upon me. He said: I said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: Did I not tell you, O Messenger of Allah, that they are a people of slander, a people of treachery, lying, and wickedness? The Jews and ʿAbd Allāh b. Salām. He said: I made my Islam public, and the Islam of my household, and my paternal aunt Khālida bt. al-Ḥārith embraced Islam, and her Islam was good.

✧ The account of Mukhayrīq [his conversion, his death, and his bequest]. Ibn Isḥāq said: As for the account of Mukhayrīq—he was a learned rabbi, and he was a wealthy man with many date-palm properties. He recognized the Messenger of God ﷺ by his description and by what he found in his knowledge, but he was overcome by his attachment to his religion and remained so until the day of Uḥud. The day of Uḥud was a Saturday. He said: “O assembly of Jews, by God, you know that the victory of Muḥammad over you is certain.” They said: “Today is the Sabbath.” He said: “You shall have no Sabbath.” Then he took up his weapon and went out until he came to the Messenger of God ﷺ at Uḥud. He made a covenant with those of his people who were behind him: “If I am killed today, my properties are for Muḥammad ﷺ, to do with them what God shows him.” When the people fought, he fought until he was killed. The Messenger of God ﷺ, as it has reached me, used to say: “Mukhayrīq is the best of the Jews.” The Messenger of God ﷺ took possession of his properties, and most of the charitable endowments of the Messenger of God ﷺ in Madinah came from them.

✧ A testimony from Ṣafiyyah concerning the obstinacy of the Jews. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. Ḥazm related to me, saying: I was told on the authority of Ṣafiyyah bt. Ḥuyayy b. Akhṭab that she said: I was the dearest of my father’s children to him, and to my uncle Abū Yāsir. I never met them together with any child of theirs but they took me rather than him. She said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah and alighted at Qubāʾ among the Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf, my father Ḥuyayy b. Akhṭab and my uncle Abū Yāsir b. Akhṭab went to him early, before dawn. She said: They did not return until sunset. She said: They came back weary, dejected, and drooping, walking slowly. She said: I hurried to meet them as I used to do, but by Allah, neither of them turned to me, because of the grief that was upon them. She said: And I heard my uncle Abū Yāsir saying to my father Ḥuyayy b. Akhṭab: Is it he? He said: Yes, by Allah. He said: Do you recognize him and confirm him? He said: Yes. He said: Then what is in your heart concerning him? He said: Enmity toward him, by Allah, as long as I live.
