✧ I came to Madinah to visit a cousin of mine who was married to al-Hasan b. ʿAli. I attended the dawn prayer with him in the Mosque of the Messenger. Ibn al-Zubayr had prepared a wedding feast that morning. A messenger of Ibn al-Zubayr came and said, "O son of the Messenger of Allah, Ibn al-Zubayr has prepared a feast this morning and sent me to you." He did not pay attention to him, but went around the mosque and dispersed the people, calling them. Then he returned to al-Hasan and said, "O son of the Messenger of Allah, Ibn al-Zubayr has prepared a feast and sent me to you." He turned to me and said, "Has the sun risen?" It was said, "No, I think it has not risen." He said, "Praise be to Allah who caused it to rise from its rising place." Then he said, "I heard my father and my grandfather, meaning the Prophet ﷺ, say: 'Whoever prays the morning prayer then sits remembering Allah until the sun rises, Allah will place between him and the Fire a veil.'" Then he said, "Arise and answer Ibn al-Zubayr." When we reached the door, Ibn al-Zubayr met him at the door and said, "O son of the Messenger of Allah, you have delayed coming to me today." He said, "Indeed I have responded to you, but I am fasting." Then he said, "Here is a gift." Al-Hasan b. ʿAli said, "I heard my father and my grandfather, meaning the Prophet ﷺ, say: 'The gift for a fasting visitor is that his beard be perfumed, his clothes be incensed and scented, and the gift for a fasting female visitor is that her head be combed, her clothes be incensed and scented.'" He said: I said, "O son of the Messenger of Allah, repeat the hadith to me." He said, "I heard my father and my grandfather, meaning the Prophet ﷺ, say: 'Whoever persists in coming to the mosque will attain a decisive verse, an awaited mercy, a novel piece of knowledge, a word that increases him in guidance, or turns him away from destruction, or he will abandon sins out of fear or modesty.'"

✧ I said to al-Hasan b. ʿAli: What do you remember from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He said: I took a date from the dates of charity and put it in my mouth. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ pulled it out and threw it back among the dates. It was said, "O Messenger of Allah, you took a date from this boy." He said, "Indeed, we, the family of Muhammad, charity is not lawful for us," or he said, "We do not eat charity." And he used to say, "Leave what causes you doubt for what does not cause you doubt, for truthfulness is tranquility, and falsehood is doubt." And he used to teach us this supplication: "O Allah, guide me among those You have guided, and take charge of me among those You have taken charge of, and bless me in what You have given, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed, for You decree and none decrees against You. Indeed, no one is humiliated whom You befriend. Blessed and exalted are You."

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me to say in the qunut of the Witr: "O Allah, guide me among those You have guided, and grant me well-being among those You have granted well-being, and take charge of me among those You have taken charge of, and bless me in what You have given, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed, for You decree and none decrees against You. Indeed, no one is humiliated whom You befriend. Blessed are You, our Lord, and exalted."

✧ I said to al-Hasan: Do you remember anything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He said: He brought me into a room, and I took a date from the dates of charity. He said, "Indeed, it is not lawful for Muhammad, nor for anyone of his family."

✧ Al-Hasan b. ʿAli delivered a sermon to us and said: "By Allah, tonight a man has been killed whom the first ones did not outstrip and the last ones will not overtake. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to send him on expeditions, with Jibril on his right and Mikaʾil on his left. By Allah, he left neither yellow nor white."

✧ When ʿAli b. Abi Talib ؓ was killed, al-Hasan b. ʿAli stood up to deliver a sermon and said: "By Allah, you have killed tonight a man on the night in which the Quran was sent down, and in which ʿIsa son of Maryam was raised, and in which Yushaʿ b. Nun, the servant of Musa, was killed." Sukayn said.

✧ Al-Hasan b. ʿAli delivered a sermon to us when his father was struck, wearing a black turban, and said: "O people, last night a man departed from you whom the first ones did not outstrip and the last ones will not overtake. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to send him on missions and give him the banner. When he smelled battle, meaning war, he fought. Jibril fought on his right and Mikaʾil on his left, and he would not return until Allah granted him victory. He has passed on, and he left neither yellow nor white except seven hundred dirhams left over from his stipend, with which he intended to buy a servant for his family. He died on the night in which ʿIsa son of Maryam ﷺ died, and on the night in which Yushaʿ b. Nun, the servant of Musa ﷺ, was taken, and it was the twenty-first of Ramadan."
