✧ I came to Madinah to visit a cousin of mine who was married to al-Hasan b. ʿAli. I attended the dawn prayer with him in the Mosque of the Messenger. Ibn al-Zubayr had prepared a wedding feast that morning. A messenger of Ibn al-Zubayr came and said, "O son of the Messenger of Allah, Ibn al-Zubayr has prepared a feast this morning and sent me to you." He did not pay attention to him, but went around the mosque and dispersed the people, calling them. Then he returned to al-Hasan and said, "O son of the Messenger of Allah, Ibn al-Zubayr has prepared a feast and sent me to you." He turned to me and said, "Has the sun risen?" It was said, "No, I think it has not risen." He said, "Praise be to Allah who caused it to rise from its rising place." Then he said, "I heard my father and my grandfather, meaning the Prophet ﷺ, say: 'Whoever prays the morning prayer then sits remembering Allah until the sun rises, Allah will place between him and the Fire a veil.'" Then he said, "Arise and answer Ibn al-Zubayr." When we reached the door, Ibn al-Zubayr met him at the door and said, "O son of the Messenger of Allah, you have delayed coming to me today." He said, "Indeed I have responded to you, but I am fasting." Then he said, "Here is a gift." Al-Hasan b. ʿAli said, "I heard my father and my grandfather, meaning the Prophet ﷺ, say: 'The gift for a fasting visitor is that his beard be perfumed, his clothes be incensed and scented, and the gift for a fasting female visitor is that her head be combed, her clothes be incensed and scented.'" He said: I said, "O son of the Messenger of Allah, repeat the hadith to me." He said, "I heard my father and my grandfather, meaning the Prophet ﷺ, say: 'Whoever persists in coming to the mosque will attain a decisive verse, an awaited mercy, a novel piece of knowledge, a word that increases him in guidance, or turns him away from destruction, or he will abandon sins out of fear or modesty.'"
