40. Sneezing and Yawning
✧ From the Prophet ﷺ, he said: 'Allah loves sneezing and hates yawning. So if one of you sneezes and praises Allah, it is a duty upon every Muslim who hears him to say yarḥamuka Allāh (may Allah have mercy on you). As for yawning, it is only from Satan, so let him suppress it as much as he can. If he says "hāh," Satan laughs at him.'

✧ From the Prophet ﷺ, he said: 'When one of you sneezes, let him say al-ḥamdu lillāh (praise be to Allah). Then let his brother or companion say to him yarḥamuka Allāh (may Allah have mercy on you). When he says yarḥamuka Allāh, let him say yahdīkum Allāh wa yuṣliḥu bālakum (may Allah guide you and set your affairs right).' Abū ʿAbdullah said: The most established thing narrated in this chapter is this ḥadīth narrated from Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Sammān.

✧ My father related to me that they were on a naval expedition in the time of Muʿāwiyah. Our ship joined the ship of Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī. When our breakfast was ready, we sent for him and he came to us. He said: 'You invited me while I am fasting, and I had no choice but to answer you because I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "A Muslim has six duties toward his brother. If he neglects any of them, he has neglected a mandatory right of his brother: he greets him with salām when he meets him; he answers him when he calls him; he says yarḥamuka Allāh (may Allah have mercy on you) when he sneezes; he visits him when he is sick; he attends his funeral when he dies; and he gives him sincere advice when he seeks it." He said: There was with us a man who liked to joke. He said to a man who had prepared our food: 'May Allah reward you with good and piety.' The man became angry with him when he repeated it. He said to Abū Ayyūb: 'What do you think of a man who, when I say to him "May Allah reward you with good and piety," gets angry and insults me?' Abū Ayyūb said: 'We used to say that whoever is not improved by good is improved by evil, so turn it around on him.' So when he came to him, he said: 'May Allah reward you with evil and hardship.' The man laughed and was pleased, and said: 'You do not give up your joking.' The man said: 'May Allah reward Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī with good.'
✧ From the Prophet ﷺ, he said: 'Four things are due from a Muslim to a Muslim: he visits him when he is sick, he attends (his funeral) when he dies, he answers him when he calls him, and he says yarḥamuka Allāh (may Allah have mercy on you) when he sneezes.'
✧ From al-Barāʾ b. ʿĀzib, he said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us with seven things and forbade us from seven. He commanded us to visit the sick, to follow funeral processions, to say yarḥamuka Allāh (may Allah have mercy on you) to the sneezer, to fulfill the oath of one who swears, to help the oppressed, to spread salām (greeting of peace), and to answer the invitation. He forbade us from gold signet rings, silver vessels, silk saddle cushions, qassī (silk blended fabric), istabraq (thick silk brocade), dībāj (silk brocade), and ḥarīr (silk).'
✧ That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'A Muslim has six duties toward another Muslim.' It was said: 'What are they, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'When you meet him, greet him with salām; when he invites you, answer him; when he seeks your advice, give him sincere advice; when he sneezes and praises Allah, say yarḥamuka Allāh (may Allah have mercy on you); when he is sick, visit him; and when he dies, follow his funeral procession.'

'A'isha, the Umm al-Mu'minin, said, "I have not seen anyone who more resembled the Prophet ﷺ in words or speech or manner of sitting than Fatima." 'A'isha continued, "When the Prophet ﷺ saw that she had come, he would greet her and then he stood up for her, kissed her, took her hand and brought her forward and made her sit in his place. When the Prophet ﷺ visited her, she greeted him, stood up for him, and kissed him. She came to the Prophet ﷺ in his final illness and he greeted her, kissed her, and told her a secret. She wept. Then he confided something else to her and she laughed. I said to the women, 'I see that this woman is superior to other women, yet she is one of them. First she wept and then she laughed.' I asked her, 'What did he say to you?' She replied, 'I would be telling a secret.' When the Prophet ﷺ died, Fatima said, 'He confided to me, "I am dying," so I wept. Then he confided to me, "You will be the first of my family to join me," so I was happy and pleased at that.'"
✧ On the authority of Jābir who said: The Prophet ﷺ was ill, so we prayed behind him while he was seated, and Abū Bakr was making his takbīr audible to the people. He turned toward us and saw us standing, so he gestured to us, and we sat down and prayed following his prayer, seated. When he said the salām, he said, "You were about to do the deed of the Persians and the Romans: they stand before their kings while they are seated. So do not do that. Follow your imams. If he prays standing, then pray standing; and if he prays seated, then pray seated."
✧ On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ who said: "When one of you yawns, let him put his hand over his mouth, for Satan enters through it."
