Translation

✧ My father related to me that they were on a naval expedition in the time of Muʿāwiyah. Our ship joined the ship of Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī. When our breakfast was ready, we sent for him and he came to us. He said: 'You invited me while I am fasting, and I had no choice but to answer you because I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "A Muslim has six duties toward his brother. If he neglects any of them, he has neglected a mandatory right of his brother: he greets him with salām when he meets him; he answers him when he calls him; he says yarḥamuka Allāh (may Allah have mercy on you) when he sneezes; he visits him when he is sick; he attends his funeral when he dies; and he gives him sincere advice when he seeks it." He said: There was with us a man who liked to joke. He said to a man who had prepared our food: 'May Allah reward you with good and piety.' The man became angry with him when he repeated it. He said to Abū Ayyūb: 'What do you think of a man who, when I say to him "May Allah reward you with good and piety," gets angry and insults me?' Abū Ayyūb said: 'We used to say that whoever is not improved by good is improved by evil, so turn it around on him.' So when he came to him, he said: 'May Allah reward you with evil and hardship.' The man laughed and was pleased, and said: 'You do not give up your joking.' The man said: 'May Allah reward Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī with good.'
