✧ I arrived in Madinah and met 'Itban b. Malik. I said: "A hadith reached me from you." He said: "Something affected my eyesight, so I sent to the Messenger of God ﷺ: 'I would love for you to come to me and pray in my house, so that I may take it as a place of prayer.'" He said: "The Prophet ﷺ came to me with whomever God willed of his companions. He entered upon me and prayed in my house while his companions conversed among themselves. Then they attributed the bulk and gravity of that to Malik b. Dukhshum." He said: "They wished that he would supplicate against him and he would perish; they wished that some illness would afflict him. The Messenger of God ﷺ finished the prayer and said: 'Does he not testify that there is no god but God and that I am the Messenger of God?' They said: 'He says that, but what is in his heart?' He said: 'No one testifies that there is no god but God and that I am the Messenger of God and then enters the Fire, or the Fire consumes him.'" He said: "This hadith pleased me, so I said to my son: 'Write it down,' and he wrote it."

✧ And his companions conversed among themselves and mentioned what they encountered from the hypocrites. Then they attributed the bulk of that to Malik b. Dukhshum. He said: "They wished that he would supplicate against him, urging him to do so. The Messenger of God finished."

✧ I met 'Itban after that, and he narrated to me a hadith that pleased me. I said to my son: "Write it down," and he wrote it. He said: "His eyesight had gone." He said: "I said: 'O Prophet of God, would you come to me and pray with me in a place I would take as a mosque?'" He said: "The Messenger of God ﷺ came and began to pray, and his companions began to converse." He said: "They mentioned what they encountered from the hypocrites in the way of harm, and they placed the bulk of that upon Malik b. al-Dukhshum. It pleased them to urge the Prophet ﷺ to supplicate against him so that he would perish. They said: 'O Prophet of God, of his affair is such and such.'" He said: "The Prophet of God ﷺ said: 'Does he not testify that there is no god but God and that Muhammad is the Messenger of God?' They said: 'He only says that with his tongue, and there is no reality to it in his heart.'" He said: "The Prophet of God ﷺ said: 'No one testifies that there is no god but God and that I am the Messenger of God, and then God will enter him into the Fire'—or he said: 'and then the Fire will consume him—ever.'"
