✧ I entered upon ʿĀʾishah and said to her, “Will you not tell me about the illness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” She said, “Yes. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ became seriously ill and asked, ‘Have the people prayed?’ We said, ‘No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘Put water for me in the basin.’ She said, “So we did, and he washed. Then he went to rise but fainted. Then he regained consciousness and asked, ‘Have the people prayed?’ We said, ‘No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘Put water for me in the basin.’ We did so. Then he went to rise but fainted. Then he regained consciousness and asked, ‘Have the people prayed?’ We said, ‘No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah.’ She said, “And the people were remaining in the mosque, waiting for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for the last ʿIshāʾ prayer. She said, “So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent to Abū Bakr, ordering him to lead the people in prayer. She said, “The messenger came to him and said, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commands you to lead the people in prayer.’ Abū Bakr, who was a tender-hearted man, said, ‘O ʿUmar, lead the people in prayer.’ ʿUmar said to him, ‘You are more entitled to that.’ She said, “So Abū Bakr led them in prayer during those days. She said, “Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ felt some lightness in himself and came out supported by two men, one of whom was al-ʿAbbās, for the ẓuhr prayer, while Abū Bakr was leading the people in prayer. When Abū Bakr saw him, he started to step back, but the Prophet ﷺ gestured to him not to step back and said to the two men, ‘Seat me next to him.’ So they seated him next to Abū Bakr. She said, “Abū Bakr prayed standing, following the prayer of the Prophet ﷺ, while the people prayed following the prayer of Abū Bakr, and the Prophet ﷺ was sitting.” ʿUbaydullāh said, “I entered upon ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās and said to him, ‘Shall I present to you what ʿĀʾishah narrated to me about the illness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?’ He said, ‘Bring it.’ So I presented her narration to him, and he did not object to anything in it except that he said, ‘Did she name for you the man who was with al-ʿAbbās?’ I said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘It was ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib.’”
