✧ I carried baskets of khabis to Umar b. al-Khattab. When I placed them before him, he opened some of them and said: O Utbah, do all the Muslims find the like of this? I said: O Commander of the Faithful, this is something reserved for the commanders. He said: Take it away; I have no need of it. He said: While I was with him, he called for his food, and thick meat and coarse bread were brought. I reached for a piece, thinking it was a camel hump, but it was the ligament of the neck. I chewed it, and when he was distracted from me, I placed it between me and the table. Then he called for his nabidh, which had almost turned into vinegar, and mixed it until it was drinkable, then he drank and gave me to drink. Then he said: O Utbah, we slaughter a camel every day. Its haunches and choice parts are for those of the people of the regions and the Muslims who are present with us. As for its neck, it is for us: we eat this thick meat that you saw and drink with it this nabidh to cut it in our bellies.
