Abū Nuʿaym the muezzin [called] the prayer, and Abū Nuʿaym was the first to call the adhān in Bayt al-Maqdis. Abū Nuʿaym led the people in prayer, and ʿUbādah came forward with me until we formed rows behind Abū Nuʿaym, while Abū Nuʿaym was reciting aloud. ʿUbādah began reciting Umm al-Qurʾān (al-Fātiḥah). When he finished, I said to ʿUbādah: You did something, and I do not know whether it is a Sunnah or a slip on your part. He said: And what is that? He said: I heard you reciting Umm al-Qurʾān while Abū Nuʿaym was reciting aloud. He said: Yes. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in one of the prayers in which the recitation is aloud, and the recitation became confused for him. When he finished, he turned to us with his face and said: Do you recite when I recite aloud? Some of us said: We do that. He said: Do not do so. I was saying to myself: What is wrong with me that I am being contended with over the Qurʾān? So do not recite anything of the Qurʾān when I recite aloud, except Umm al-Qurʾān. All of them are trustworthy (thiqāt).
