✧ When news of the Prophet’s ﷺ mission reached Abu Dharr, he said to his brother, “Ride to this valley and find out for me about this man who claims that he is a prophet receiving news from heaven. Listen to what he says, then come back to me.” His brother set out, reached him, and listened to what he said. He then returned to Abu Dharr and told him, “I saw him enjoining noble character and speaking words that are not poetry.” Abu Dharr said, “You have not satisfied me concerning what I wanted.” He therefore took provisions and carried an old waterskin containing water until he reached Mecca. He went to the Mosque and looked for the Prophet ﷺ, though he did not recognize him, and he disliked asking about him. When part of the night had passed, Ali saw him and realized that he was a stranger. When Abu Dharr saw him, he followed him, but neither of them asked the other anything until morning. Abu Dharr then carried his waterskin and provisions to the Mosque and remained there throughout that day without seeing the Prophet ﷺ. When evening came, he returned to his sleeping place. Ali passed by him and said, “Has the man not yet learned where his lodging is?” He made him rise and took him along with him, but neither of them asked the other anything. On the third day, Ali returned and did the same, then stayed with him and said, “Will you not tell me what brought you here?” He replied, “If you give me a solemn pledge that you will guide me, I will.” Ali did so, and Abu Dharr told him. Ali said, “He is indeed true, and he is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. In the morning, follow me. If I see anything that makes me fear for you, I will stop as though I am relieving myself. If I continue, follow me until you enter where I enter.” Abu Dharr did so and followed him until Ali entered upon the Prophet ﷺ, and Abu Dharr entered with him. He listened to what the Prophet ﷺ said and embraced Islam on the spot. The Prophet ﷺ told him, “Return to your people and inform them until my command reaches you.” Abu Dharr said, “By Him in whose hand is my soul, I shall proclaim it among them.” He went out to the Mosque and called out at the top of his voice, “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” The people rose and beat him until they knocked him down. Al-Abbas came and threw himself over him, saying, “Woe to you! Do you not know that he belongs to Ghifar and that your trade route to Syria passes through their territory?” Thus, he rescued him from them. The next day, Abu Dharr returned and did the same. They beat him and rushed upon him, but al-Abbas threw himself over him.
