✧ Ibn 'Abbas said to us: 'Shall I not tell you about the conversion of Abu Dharr?' We said: 'Yes.' He said: Abu Dharr said: 'I was a man from Banu Ghifar. It reached us that a man had appeared in Makkah claiming to be a prophet. I said to my brother: "Go to this man, speak with him, and bring me news of him." He went and met him, then returned. I said: "What do you have?" He said: "By Allah, I saw a man commanding good and forbidding evil." I said: "You have not satisfied me with the news." So I took a provision bag and a staff, then set out for Makkah. I did not know him and disliked asking about him. I drank from the water of Zamzam and stayed in the mosque. A man passed by me and said: "The man seems to be a stranger." I said: "Yes." He said: "Come to the house." I went with him, neither he asking me about anything nor I asking him. When morning came, I went to the mosque to ask about him, but no one told me anything about him. A man passed by me and said: "Do you know his house?" I still did not know his house. I said: "No." He went with me and brought me into his house, then said to me: "What brought you to this town?" I said: "It reached us that a man has appeared here claiming to be a prophet. I sent my brother, but he did not satisfy me with the news, so I wanted to meet him." He said to me: "Indeed, you have been guided. This is my way to him. Follow me and enter where I enter. If I see someone I fear for you, I will stand by the wall as if fixing my sandal, and you go on." He went and I went with him until he entered and I entered with him. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, present Islam to me." He presented it to me, and I embraced Islam on the spot. He said to me: "O Abu Dharr, return to your land, and when our appearance reaches you, come." I said: "By the One who sent you with the truth, I will proclaim it among them." He came to the mosque while Quraysh were there and said: "O assembly of Quraysh, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger." They said: "Rise against this apostate." They rose and beat me until I almost died. Al-'Abbas caught up with me, leaned over me, and said: "Woe to you! You are killing a man from Banu Ghifar, and your trade route passes through Ghifar." So they left me. When morning came, I went to the mosque and said the same as I had said the day before, and they did to me the same as they had done the day before. Al-'Abbas caught up with me, leaned over me, and said: "You are killing a man from Banu Ghifar," and he said the same as his statement the day before. This was the conversion of Abu Dharr.'
