✧ Ibn Abbas narrated to them about the beginning of Abu Dharr's Islam. He said: When it reached him that a man had emerged in Makkah claiming that he was a prophet, he sent his brother and said: "Go until you bring me news of him and what you hear from him." His brother went until he heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ, then returned to Abu Dharr and informed him that he commanded good and forbade evil, and commanded noble character. Abu Dharr said: "You have not satisfied me." So he took a worn waterskin containing his water and provisions. Then he set out until he came to Makkah. He was afraid to ask anyone about anything, and he did not meet the Messenger of God ﷺ. He entered the mosque and wandered in it until evening. When it became dark, Ali b. Abi Talib passed by him and said: "Who is the man?" He said: "A man from Ghifar." He said: "Come to the house." So he went with him, neither of them asking the other about anything. When morning came, Abu Dharr went out seeking. When evening came, he slept in the mosque. Ali b. Abi Talib passed by him and said: "It is time for the man to know his place." On the third day, Ali made a promise to him that if he told him his matter, he would conceal it and keep it hidden. So he informed him that it had reached him that a man had emerged in Makkah claiming that he saw things, so he sent his brother, but he did not bring him what would satisfy him, so he came himself. Ali said to him: "I am going out, so follow me. If I see what I fear for you, I will stand as if I were pouring water." So Ali went out and Abu Dharr went out following his tracks, until he entered upon the Messenger of God ﷺ and Abu Dharr entered following his tracks. He informed the Messenger of God ﷺ and heard from him, and he accepted Islam. Then he said: "O Messenger of God, command me with your order." He said: "Return to your people until my news reaches you." He said: "By God, I will not return until I proclaim Islam openly." So he went to the mosque and stood crying out at the top of his voice: "I bear witness that there is no god but God, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger." The polytheists said: "The man has apostatized (to Islam)." Then they rose against him and beat him until he fell. Al-Abbas b. Abd al-Muttalib passed by him, bent over him, and said: "You have killed the man, O assembly of Quraysh. You are merchants, and your route passes by Ghifar. Do you want the road to be cut off?" So they desisted from him. The next day, he returned to his statement, and they jumped on him and beat him until he fell. Al-Abbas passed by him, bent over him, and said to them the like of what he had said the day before, so they desisted from him. This was the beginning of Abu Dharr's Islam ؓ.
