حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سِنَانٍ الْقَزَّازُ ثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ وَسَعْدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ قَالَا ثَنَا الْمُثَنَّى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْقَصِيرُ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو جَمْرَةَ قَالَ قَالَ لَنَا ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ
أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِإِسْلَامِ أَبِي ذَرٍّ؟ قَالَ قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو ذَرٍّ كُنْتُ رَجُلًا مِنْ غِفَارٍ فَبَلَغَنَا أَنَّ رَجُلًا خَرَجَ بِمَكَّةَ يَزْعُمُ أَنَّهُ نَبِيٌّ فَقُلْتُ لِأَخِي انْطَلِقْ إِلَى هَذَا الرَّجُلِ فَكَلِّمْهُ وَائْتِنِي بِخَبَرِهِ فَانْطَلَقَ فَلَقِيَهُ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقُلْتُ مَا عِنْدَكَ؟ فَقَالَ وَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَجُلًا يَأْمُرُ بِالْخَيْرِ وَيَنْهَى عَنِ الشَّرِّ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ لَمْ يَشْفِنِي مِنَ الْخَبَرِ قَالَ فَأَخَذْتُ جِرَابًا وَعَصَا ثُمَّ أَقْبَلْتُ إِلَى مَكَّةَ فَجَعَلْتُ لَا أَعْرِفُهُ وَأَكْرَهُ أَنْ أَسْأَلَ عَنْهُ وَأَشْرَبُ مِنْ مَاءِ زَمْزَمَ وَأَكُونُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ قَالَ فَمَرَّ بِي عَلِيٌّ فَقَالَ كَأَنَّ الرَّجُلَ غَرِيبٌ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَانْطَلَقَ إِلَى الْمَنْزِلِ فَانْطَلَقْتُ مَعَهُ لَا يَسْأَلُنِي عَنْ شَيْءٍ وَلَا أُخْبِرُهُ قَالَ ثُمَّ لَمَّا أَصْبَحْتُ غَدَوْتُ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ لِأَسْأَلَ عَنْهُ وَلَيْسَ أَحَدٌ يُخْبِرُنِي عَنْهُ بِشَيْءٍ فَمَرَّ بِي عَلِيٌّ فَقَالَ أَمَا إِنَّ لِلرَّجُلِ أَنْ يَعْرِفَ مَنْزِلَهُ بَعْدُ؟ قَالَ قُلْتُ لَا قَالَ انْطَلِقْ مَعِي فَقَالَ مَا أَقْدَمَكَ هَذِهِ الْبَلْدَةَ؟ قُلْتُ لَهُ إِنْ كَتَمْتَ عَلَيَّ أَخْبَرْتُكَ؟ قَالَ فَإِنِّي أَفْعَلُ قُلْتُ لَهُ بَلَغَنَا أَنَّهُ خَرَجَ مِنْ هَا هُنَا رَجُلٌ يَزْعُمُ أَنَّهُ نَبِيٌّ فَأَرْسَلْتُ أَخِي لِيُكَلِّمَهُ فَرَجَعَ وَلَمْ يَشْفِنِي مِنَ الْخَبَرِ فَأَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَلْقَاهُ قَالَ أَمَا إِنَّكَ قَدْ رَشَدْتَ هَذَا وَجْهِي فَاتَّبِعْنِي وَادْخُلْ حَيْثُ أَدْخَلُ فَإِنِّي إِنْ رَأَيْتُ أَحَدًا أَخَافَهُ عَلَيْكَ قُمْتُ إِلَى الْحَائِطِ أُصْلِحُ نَعْلِي وَامْضِ أَنْتَ قَالَ فَمَضَى وَمَضَيْتُ مَعَهُ حَتَّى دَخَلَ وَدَخَلْتُ مَعَهُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَعْرِضْ عَلَيَّ الْإِسْلَامَ فَعَرَضَ عَلَيَّ الْإِسْلَامَ فَأَسْلَمْتُ مَكَانِي قَالَ فَقَالَ لِي «يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ اكْتُمْ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ وَارْجِعْ إِلَى بَلَدِكَ فَإِذَا بَلَغَكَ ظُهُورُنَا فَأَقْبِلْ» قَالَ فَقُلْتُ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ لَأَصْرُخَنَّ بِهَا بَيْنَ أَظْهُرِهِمْ فَجَاءَ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ وَقُرَيْشٍ فِيهِ فَقَالَ يَا مَعْشَرَ قُرَيْشٍ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ فَقَالُوا قُومُوا إِلَى هَذَا الصَّابِئِ فَقَامُوا فَضُرِبْتُ لِأَمُوتَ فَأَدْرَكَنِي الْعَبَّاسُ فَأَكَبَّ عَلَيَّ ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ فَقَالَ وَيْلَكُمْ تَقْتُلُونَ رَجُلًا مِنْ بَنِي غِفَارٍ وَمَتْجَرُكُمْ وَمَمَرُّكُمْ عَلَى غِفَارٍ فَأَقْلَعُوا عَنِّي فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحْتُ الْغَدَ رَجَعْتُ فَقُلْتُ مِثْلَ مَا قُلْتُ بِالْأَمْسِ فَقَالُوا قُومُوا إِلَى هَذَا الصَّابِئِ فَأَدْرَكَنِي الْعَبَّاسُ فَأَكَبَّ عَلَيَّ وَقَالَ مِثْلَ مَقَالَتِهِ بِالْأَمْسِ فَكَانَ أَوَّلُ إِسْلَامِ أَبِي ذَرٍّ

✧ "Shall I tell you about the Islam of Abu Dharr?" He said, "We said, 'Yes.'" He said, "Abu Dharr said: I was a man from Ghifar, and it reached us that a man had appeared in Makkah claiming to be a prophet. I said to my brother, 'Go to this man and speak with him, and bring me his news.' He went and met him, then returned. I said, 'What do you have?' He said, 'By Allah, I saw a man who commands good and forbids evil.' I said to him, 'You have not satisfied me with the news.' So I took a provision bag and a staff, then set out for Makkah. I did not recognize him and disliked asking about him, and I drank from Zamzam water and stayed in the mosque. Ali passed by me and said, 'The man seems like a stranger.' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Come to the house.' I went with him, and he did not ask me about anything, nor did I inform him. Then when morning came, I went to the mosque to ask about him, but no one told me anything about him. Ali passed by me and said, 'Does the man still not know his place?' I said, 'No.' He said, 'Come with me.' He said, 'What brought you to this town?' I said to him, 'If you keep it secret, I will tell you.' He said, 'I will.' I said to him, 'It reached us that a man has appeared here claiming to be a prophet. I sent my brother to speak with him, and he returned without satisfying me with the news, so I wanted to meet him.' He said, 'You have been guided. This is my direction, so follow me and enter where I enter. If I see anyone I fear for you, I will stand by the wall fixing my sandal, and you proceed.' So he went, and I went with him until he entered, and I entered with him upon the Prophet ﷺ. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, present Islam to me.' He presented Islam to me, and I embraced Islam on the spot. He said to me, 'O Abu Dharr, keep this matter secret and return to your land. When you hear of our emergence, come forward.' I said, 'By the One who sent you with truth, I will proclaim it among them.' He went to the mosque while Quraysh were in it and said, 'O assembly of Quraysh, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.' They said, 'Rise against this Sabian.' They rose and beat me to near death. Al-Abbas caught me and leaned over me, then turned to them and said, 'Woe to you! You kill a man from Banu Ghifar, while your trade route and passage are through Ghifar.' So they left me. When morning came, I returned and said the same as I said yesterday. They said, 'Rise against this Sabian.' Al-Abbas caught me and leaned over me and said the same as he had said yesterday. Thus was the beginning of Abu Dharr's Islam."
