حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، نَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَاصِمٍ، نَا صَالِحٌ الْمُرِّيُّ وَهُوَ صَالِحُ بْنُ بَشِيرٍ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ التَّيْمِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَقَفَ عَلَى حَمْزَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ حِينَ اسْتُشْهِدَ فَنَظَرَ إِلَى مَنْظَرٍ، لَمْ يَنْظُرْ إِلَى مَنْظَرٍ أَوْجَعَ لِلْقَلْبِ مِنْهُ، أَوْ قَالَ لِقَلْبِهِ مِنْهُ، وَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ وَقَدْ مُثِّلَ بِهِ فَقَالَ: رَحْمَةُ اللهِ عَلَيْكَ، إِنْ كُنْتَ مَا عَلِمْتُ لَوَصُولًا لِلرَّحِمِ فَعُولًا لِلْخَيْرَاتِ، وَاللهِ لَوْلَا حُزْنُ مَنْ بَعْدَكَ عَلَيْكَ لَسَرَّنِي أَنْ أَتْرُكَكَ حَتَّى يَحْشُرَكَ اللهُ مِنْ بُطُونِ السِّبَاعِ - أَوْ كَلِمَةً نَحْوَهَا - أَمَا وَاللهِ عَلَيَّ ذَلِكَ لَأُمَثِّلَنَّ بِسَبْعِينَ كَمُثْلَتِكَ. فَنَزَلَ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ بِهَذِهِ السُّورَةِ وَقَرَأَ: وَإِنْ عَاقَبْتُمْ فَعَاقِبُوا بِمِثْلِ مَا عُوقِبْتُمْ بِهِ إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ، فَكَفَّرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَمْسَكَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood over Hamzah b. Abd al-Muttalib when he was martyred and looked at a sight more painful to the heart than any other he had seen, or he said: to his heart. He looked at him and saw that he had been mutilated, so he said: May Allah have mercy on you. You were, as far as I know, one who maintained ties of kinship and did good deeds. By Allah, were it not for the grief of those after you, it would please me to leave you until Allah gathers you from the bellies of beasts – or something similar. By Allah, I will mutilate seventy like your mutilation. Then Jibril ﷺ came down to Muhammad ﷺ with this chapter and recited: And if you punish, then punish with the like of that with which you were afflicted, to the end of the verse. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ atoned and refrained from that.
