✧ My father was in charge of some affair of Makkah during the time of 'Uthman. 'Uthman came to Makkah, and he was met at Qudayd. The people of the water caught a partridge and cooked it with water and salt, making it a broth for tharid. It was presented to 'Uthman and his companions, but they refrained when they saw it. 'Uthman said, 'It is game that they caught for us; we did not command them to hunt it. A people in the state of ihram [actually halal, not muhrim] hunted it and fed us, so what is wrong with it? Who can speak about this?' Some said, ''Ali.' So he sent for him. He came - it is as if I can see him when he came brushing off leaves from his palms. 'Uthman said to him, 'Game that we did not hunt and did not command to be hunted; a people in the state of halal hunted it and fed us, so what is wrong with it?' 'Ali said, 'I adjure by Allah a man who witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a leg of a wild donkey or its hindquarter was brought to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We are people in the state of ihram, so feed it to those who are not in ihram."' Twelve men from the companions of the Prophet ﷺ testified. Then he said, 'I adjure by Allah a man who witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when ostrich eggs were brought to him, and he said, "We are in the state of ihram, so feed them to those who are not in ihram."' Then a number less than them testified. 'Uthman turned his side away from the food, and the people of the water ate that food.
