✧ Some birds were given as a gift to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he divided them among his wives. Each woman received three. In the morning, some of his wives—Ṣafiyya or another—still had some, and she brought them to him. He said, “O God, bring me the most beloved of Your creation to You to eat with me from this.” I said, “O God, make him a man from the Anṣār.” Then ʿAlī, may God have mercy on him, came. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “O Anas, see who is at the door.” I looked and saw ʿAlī, and I said, “The Messenger of God ﷺ is occupied.” Then I came and stood before the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said, “See who is at the door.” I looked and saw ʿAlī, until he did that three times. Then ʿAlī entered walking, with me behind him. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “Who prevented you, may God have mercy on you?” He said, “This is the last of three times that Anas turned me away, claiming that you were occupied.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “What made you do what you did?” I said, “O Messenger of God, I heard your supplication and I wanted it to be from my people.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “A man may love his people, a man may love his people,” saying it three times.
