وَحَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ، نَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ، نَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ سِنَانٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الزَّاهِرِيَّةِ، عَنْ كَثِيرِ بْنِ مُرَّةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ;

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delayed coming out to his companions for the Fajr prayer until they said: “The sun has risen – or is about to rise.” Then he came out and led them in the Fajr prayer, and said: “Remain in your ranks.” Then he turned to them and said: “Do you know what kept me from you?” They said: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said: “I prayed in my prayer place, and sleep overcame me, and my Lord, Blessed and Exalted, came to me in the most beautiful form and said: ‘O Muhammad.’ I said: ‘At Your service, my Lord, and ready to obey.’ He said: ‘About what do the Highest Assembly dispute?’ I said: ‘I do not know, my Lord.’ He placed His hand between my shoulders until I felt its coolness between my breasts, and I knew what He asked me about. Then He said: ‘O Muhammad.’ I said: ‘At Your service, my Lord, and ready to obey.’ He said: ‘About what do the Highest Assembly dispute?’ I said: ‘About expiations and ranks.’ He said: ‘What are the expiations and ranks?’ I said: ‘The expiations are performing ablution thoroughly in difficult circumstances, walking on foot to Friday prayers, and sitting in the mosques after the prayers. As for the ranks: feeding others, speaking kindly, and prostrating at night while people sleep.’ My Lord, Blessed and Exalted, said: ‘Ask Me, O Muhammad.’ I said: ‘I ask You for doing good deeds, abandoning evil deeds, and love for the poor. I ask You to forgive me and have mercy on me. If You intend a trial for a people, take me to You without being tried. O Allah, I ask You for Your love, the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds that bring me closer to Your love. O Allah, I ask You for faith that touches my heart so that I know nothing will befall me except what You have decreed for me, and contentment with what You have apportioned for me.’”
