✧ While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was escorting a funeral, a man came to him with a mount for him to ride, but he refused. When the funeral was lowered, another man came to him with a mount, and he rode it. Then the first man met him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I offered you my mount to ride but you refused, and so-and-so offered you his mount and you rode it." He said: "You offered me your mount while the angels were escorting the funeral, and I was not going to ride while the angels were walking. If you had offered it after it was buried, I would have ridden it."

machine translationThis hadith is an error. It is not a hadith of Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, and Abū Salamah's narration from Thawbān does not occur. Rather, this is a hadith narrated by Abū Sallām from Thawbān. Yaḥyā b. Abī Kathīr narrates from Zayd b. Sallām, from his grandfather Abū Sallām. So it is possible that he took it from Zayd, from Abū Sallām, from Thawbān, from the Prophet ﷺ, and dropped Zayd from the middle, or that he did not memorize it from him. I do not know of Abū Salamah narrating from Thawbān anything except a hadith narrated by Abū Saʿd al-Baqqāl, and it is a rejected (munkar) hadith, from Abū Salamah, from Thawbān, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: "Whoever bears witness that there is no god but God..." My father said: As for Abū Saʿd al-Baqqāl, I do not know that he heard from Abū Salamah or from Abū Sallām. And when you see a man from whom al-Thawrī does not narrate, and I think he said, and Shuʿbah, though they both lived in his time, then what do you think of him?
