✧ 'Umar b. al-Khattab delivered a sermon on Friday. He mentioned the Prophet of Allah ﷺ and mentioned Abu Bakr, then said: "I saw a rooster peck me three times, and I do not think it is but for the approach of my term. Some people order me to appoint a successor, but Allah, Blessed and Exalted, would not let His religion or His caliphate be lost, by the One Who sent His Prophet ﷺ. If a matter hastens me, the caliphate is a consultation among these six with whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died while he was pleased with them. I know that some people criticize this matter; I struck them with this hand of mine for the sake of Islam. If they do so, they are the enemies of Allah, the disbelievers, the misguided. Then I will not leave after me anything more important to me than kalalah. I have not reviewed anything with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as I reviewed kalalah, and he was not harsh with me about anything as he was harsh with me about it, until he poked his finger into my chest and said: 'O 'Umar, is not the verse of summer at the end of Surat al-Nisa' sufficient for you?' If I live, I will judge in it with a ruling by which those who read the Quran and those who do not read the Quran will judge. O Allah, I call You to witness over the commanders of the garrison cities, for I sent them only to teach the people the Sunnah of their Prophet ﷺ, to distribute their spoils among them, and to raise to me whatever is unclear to them of their affairs. Then, O people, you eat two plants that I do not see except as evil: this onion and garlic. I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he found their smell on a man in the mosque, order him to be taken out to al-Baqi'. So whoever eats them, let him kill them by cooking."
