✧ O Allah, strengthen the religion by whichever of these two men is more beloved to You—either ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb or Abū Jahl b. Hishām. And I hope that the supplication of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is for you. I said: Direct me to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—where is he? When they recognized sincerity in me, they directed me to the dwelling where he was. I came and knocked on the door. He said: Who is this? I said: ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb—and they knew my harshness toward the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and did not know of my Islam—so none of them dared open the door for me until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them: Open for him; if Allah wills good for him, He will guide him. He said: The door was opened for me, and two men took hold of my upper arms until I drew near to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them: Release him. So they released me, and I sat before him. He took hold of the collar of my shirt and then said: Become a Muslim, O son of al-Khaṭṭāb; O Allah, guide him. I said: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that you are the Messenger of Allah. He said: The Muslims shouted takbīr so loudly that it was heard in the streets of Makkah. He said: They had been seventy before that, and when a man became Muslim and people learned of it, they would beat him and he would beat them. He said: I went to a man and knocked on his door. He said: Who is this? I said: ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb. He came out to me, and I said to him: Do you know that I have become a Ṣābiʾ (i.e., changed my religion)? He said: Have you done so? I said: Yes. He said: Do not do it. He said: Then he entered the house and shut the door in my face. He said: I went to another man of Quraysh and called him. He came out, and I said to him: Do you know that I have become a Ṣābiʾ? He said: Have you done so? I said: Yes. He said: Do not do it. Then he entered the house and shut the door in my face. I said: This is nothing. He said: And then I was not beaten, and nothing was said to me. The man said: Would you like your Islam to become known? He said: I said: Yes. He said: When the people sit in the Ḥijr, go to so-and-so and say to him privately: Do you realize that I have become a Ṣābiʾ? For he rarely conceals anything. So I went to him when the people had gathered in the Ḥijr and said to him privately: Do you realize that I have become a Ṣābiʾ? He said: Have you done so? I said: Yes. He said: Then he called out at the top of his voice: Indeed, ʿUmar has become a Ṣābiʾ. He said: Those people rushed at me and kept beating me while I beat them until my maternal uncle came. It was said to him: ʿUmar has become a Ṣābiʾ. He stood upon the Ḥijr and called out at the top of his voice: Indeed, I have granted protection to my sister's son, so let no one touch him. He said: They dispersed from me. And I did not wish to see any Muslim being beaten except that I saw it. I said: This is nothing—people are being beaten while I am not beaten, and nothing is said to me. When the people sat in the Ḥijr, I went to my maternal uncle and said: Listen, I return your protection to you. He said: Do not do it. He said: I refused, and I kept being beaten and beating others until Allah made Islam prevail. And we do not know of this hadith being narrated from Usāma b. Zayd, from his father, from his grandfather, from ʿUmar except by Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm al-Ḥunaynī, and we do not know of any chain for the story of ʿUmar's Islam more sound than this chain, although al-Ḥunaynī—as we mentioned—left Madinah and his hadith became confused and disordered.
