✧ On the day of Badr, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at the polytheists, who were a thousand, and at his companions, who were three hundred and seventeen men. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ faced the qiblah, then stretched out his hands and began calling upon his Lord, saying: "Fulfill for me what You promised me. O Allah, if You destroy this band of the people of Islam, You will never be worshiped on earth." He said: He kept calling upon his Lord with his hands outstretched until his cloak fell from his shoulders. Abu Bakr came to him, took his cloak, and placed it back on his shoulders. Then he embraced him from behind and said, "O Prophet of Allah, enough of your urgent plea to your Lord, for He will surely fulfill what He promised you." Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: "When you sought help of your Lord, He answered you: 'Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand of the angels, one following another'" (Qur'an 8:9). He said: And Allah reinforced him with the angels. Abu Zumayl said: Ibn 'Abbas narrated to me: While a man on that day was running in pursuit of a man from the polytheists, he heard a strike of a whip above him and the voice of a horseman saying, "Advance, Hayzum!" He looked at the polytheist ahead of him, who fell on his back, gazing up at him, and saw that he had been slashed on the side of his face like a whip mark. The Ansari went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him, and he said, "You spoke the truth; that was reinforcement from the third heaven." On that day they killed seventy and took seventy captives. Abu Zumayl said: Ibn 'Abbas said: When they took the captives, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Abu Bakr, O 'Umar, what do you think about these captives?" Abu Bakr said, "They are our cousins and kinsmen. I think you should take, or we should take, ransom from them, so that it may be strength for us against the disbelievers." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O 'Umar, what do you think?" I said, "No, by Allah, I do not agree with Abu Bakr. O Prophet of Allah, I think you should let us strike their necks, and let 'Ali be given 'Aqil so that he may strike his neck, and give me so-and-so, a relative of 'Umar, so that I may strike his neck. For these are the leaders of disbelief and its champions." He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ inclined to what Abu Bakr said and did not incline to what I said. The next day, I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and found him and Abu Bakr sitting and weeping. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what makes you and your companion weep? If it is something I should weep over, I will weep with you; and if not, I will pretend to weep because of your weeping." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I weep because of what your companions proposed to me about taking ransom. The punishment for their proposal has been shown to me, closer than this tree" - a tree near the Prophet of Allah ﷺ. Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: "It is not for a prophet to have captives until he has made slaughter in the land. You desire the goods of this world, but Allah desires the Hereafter. And Allah is Mighty and Wise" (Qur'an 8:67).
