✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ withdrew from his wives, I entered the mosque and found the people tapping with pebbles and saying: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has divorced his wives." That was before the command of hijab. He said: I entered upon 'A'ishah and said, "O daughter of Abu Bakr, has your affair reached the point of harming the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" She said, "What have I to do with you, O son of al-Khattab? Attend to your own concerns." I entered upon Hafsah, daughter of 'Umar, and said, "O Hafsah, has your affair reached the point of harming Allah and His Messenger? You know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ does not love you, and were it not for me, he would have divorced you." He said: She wept intensely. I said, "Where is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said: He is in his storeroom, in the upper room. I found the servant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Rabah, sitting on the threshold of the upper room, dangling his legs over a carved wooden trunk which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to climb. I called out, "O Rabah, ask permission for me to see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He looked at the room, then looked at me, and said nothing. I said, "O Rabah, ask permission for me to see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for I think he supposes I came for Hafsah's sake. By Allah, if he ordered me to strike her neck, I would strike her neck." He gestured to me, and I entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as he was lying on a mat. I sat down, and he had only a waist wrapper on him, nothing else. The mat had left marks on his body. I cast my gaze around the storeroom of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I saw a small amount of barley, about a sa', and some leaves of the sant tree in a corner of the room. My eyes filled with tears. He said, "What makes you weep, O son of al-Khattab?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah, why should I not weep when this mat has left marks on your body, and this is your storeroom with nothing in it but what I see, while Caesar and Chosroes live amidst fruits and rivers? You are the Messenger of Allah and His chosen one, and this is your storeroom." He said, "Are you not pleased that they have this world and we have the Hereafter?" I said, "Yes." I had entered upon him while I could see anger in his face. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what hardship has come to you from the matter of the women? If you have divorced them, Allah is with you, and His angels, and Jibril, and Mika'il, and I, and Abu Bakr." Rarely did I speak words - and I praise Allah - except that I hoped Allah would confirm my saying. Then this verse was revealed: "Perhaps his Lord, if he divorces you, will give him in exchange wives better than you" (Qur'an 66:5). And it was revealed: "If you two support one another against him, then indeed Allah is his protector, and Jibril..." (Qur'an 66:4) to the end of the verse. The daughter of Abu Bakr and Hafsah used to support one another against the rest of the wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, did you divorce them?" He said, "No." I said, "Should I go down and inform them that you have not divorced them?" He said, "Yes, if you wish." I kept talking to him until the anger left his face, and he smiled with his teeth showing, and he had the most beautiful mouth of all people. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ descended, and I descended, clinging to the wooden trunk. He descended as if walking on the ground without touching it with his hand. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, you were in the upper room for twenty-nine days?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, the month may be twenty-nine." I stood at the door of the mosque and called out at the top of my voice: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has not divorced his wives." And the verse was revealed: "When news of safety or fear comes to them, they spread it; but if they had referred it to the Messenger and to those in authority among them, those who can draw conclusions would have known it" (Qur'an 4:83). He said: I was the one who drew that conclusion from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
