✧ Hatib b. Abi Balta'ah wrote a letter to the people of Makkah, and Allah informed His Prophet of it. He sent 'Ali and al-Zubayr in pursuit of the letter, and they caught up with a woman on a camel, and extracted the letter from a braid among her braids, as the Prophet of Allah ﷺ had told them. He sent for Hatib and said, "O Hatib, did you write this letter?" He said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "What prompted you to do that?" He said, "By Allah, I am indeed sincere to Allah and His Messenger, but I was a stranger among the people of Makkah, and my family was among them, so I feared for them, and I wrote a letter that will not harm Allah and His Messenger at all, and perhaps there may be some benefit in it for my family." 'Umar said: I drew my sword and said, "O Messenger of Allah, let me deal with Hatib, for he has disbelieved, and I will strike his neck." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O son of al-Khattab, what do you know? Perhaps Allah looked upon this band of the people of Badr and said, 'Do what you wish, for I have forgiven you.'"
