✧ He stood as a speaker on the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, praised and extolled Allah, then said, 'To proceed: Verily, the prohibition of wine was revealed on the day it was revealed, and it is from five things: grapes, dates, honey, wheat, and barley. Wine is whatever clouds the intellect. O people, I wish the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had not left us until he made a covenant with us regarding it, a covenant we would abide by: the grandfather, the kalalah, and categories of riba.' I said, 'What do you think about the sixth, made from sind, called al-jahil, from which a man drinks a draught and it throws him down, made from rice?' He said, 'This did not exist in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; had it existed, he would have forbidden it. Do you not see that it encompasses all drinks?' He said, 'Wine is whatever clouds the intellect.'
