✧ The wives of the Prophet ﷺ mentioned how much they let their garments trail. He said, 'A handspan.' They said, 'A handspan is little; the private parts may show.' He said, 'Then a forearm's length.' They said, 'Their feet will show.' He said, 'A forearm's length; they are not to exceed that.'

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationMasʿūd b. Saʿd al-Juʿfī narrated it from Muṭarrif, from Zayd al-ʿAmmī, from Abū al-Ṣiddīq al-Nājī, from Ibn ʿUmar, from ʿUmar. Sābiq al-Raqqī followed him in narrating it from Muṭarrif. Sharīk al-Qāḍī differed from the two of them: he narrated it from Muṭarrif and traced it back to Ibn ʿUmar, and did not mention ʿUmar. Sufyān al-Thawrī followed him, narrating it from Zayd al-ʿAmmī, from Abū al-Ṣiddīq al-Nājī, from Ibn ʿUmar, from the Prophet ﷺ, without mentioning ʿUmar in it. It was likewise narrated from Ismāʿīl b. Abī Khālid, from Qays b. Abī Ḥāzim, from Ibn ʿUmar, from the Prophet ﷺ. Muṭarrif is among the most reliable (athbāt), and two trustworthy (thiqah) men agreed in narrating from him, tracing it back to ʿUmar. Were it not that al-Thawrī differed from him, narrating it from Zayd al-ʿAmmī without mentioning ʿUmar in it, the statement would be that of those who traced it back to ʿUmar, because he added, and the addition of a trustworthy narrator is accepted.
