A man came to ʿUmar ؓ and said: "O Commander of the Believers, give me a mount." He said: "By God, I will not give you a mount." The man said: "By God, you will surely give me one." He said: "By God, I will not give you a mount." The man said: "By God, you will surely give me one. I am a traveller, and my mount has worn me out." He said: "By God, I will not give you a mount," until he had sworn about twenty oaths. He said: A man from the Anṣār said to him: "What is the matter with you and the Commander of the Believers?" He said: "By God, he will surely give me a mount. I am a traveller, and my mount has worn me out." He said: Then ʿUmar said: "By God, I will give you a mount, then by God, I will give you a mount." He said: So he gave him a mount, then said: "Whoever swears an oath, then sees that something else is better than it, let him do what is better, and let him expiate for his oath."
