حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمٌ وَحُجَيْنٌ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ

مَثَلُ الْمُؤْمِنِ مَثَلُ شَجَرَةٍ لَا تَطْرَحُ وَرَقَهَا. قَالَ: فَوَقَعَ النَّاسُ فِي شَجَرِ الْبَدْوِ، وَوَقَعَ فِي قَلْبِي أَنَّهَا النَّخْلَةُ فَاسْتَحْيَيْتُ أَنْ أَتَكَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: هِيَ النَّخْلَةُ. قَالَ: فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِعُمَرَ فَقَالَ: يَا بُنَيَّ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَتَكَلَّمَ ؟ فَوَاللهِ لَأَنْ تَكُونَ قُلْتَ ذَلِكَ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ يَكُونَ لِي كَذَا وَكَذَا

Translation

✧ The likeness of the believer is that of a tree that does not shed its leaves. He said: The people fell to mentioning the trees of the desert, and it occurred to my heart that it was the date palm, but I was too shy to speak. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'It is the date palm.' He said: I mentioned that to Umar, and he said: 'My dear son, what prevented you from speaking? By Allah, if you had said that, it would have been dearer to me than having such and such.'
