✧ While we were with the Messenger of God ﷺ in Makkah, and he was among a group of his companions, he said: “Let a man among you stand with me, but let no man stand with me in whose heart is even an atom’s weight of deceit.” He said: “So I stood with him, and I took a water skin, which I thought contained only water. I went out with the Messenger of God ﷺ until we were in the upper part of Makkah, and I saw black shapes gathered together. He said: “The Messenger of God ﷺ drew a line for me, then said: ‘Stand here until I come to you.’” He said: “I stood, and the Messenger of God ﷺ went to them, and I saw them stirring toward him. He said: “The Messenger of God ﷺ conversed with them for a long night, until he came to me at dawn. He said to me: ‘Have you been standing all along, O Ibn Masud?’ I said to him: ‘O Messenger of God, did you not tell me: stand until I come to you?’ He said: “Then he said to me: ‘Do you have any water for ablution?’ I said: ‘Yes.’ I opened the water skin, and it was date-wine (nabidh). I said to him: ‘O Messenger of God, by God, I took the water skin thinking it was only water, and it turned out to be nabidh.’ The Messenger of God ﷺ said: ‘A good date and purifying water.’ Then he performed ablution with it. When he stood to pray, two persons from among them caught up with him and said to him: ‘O Messenger of God, we would like you to lead us in our prayer.’ He said: “The Messenger of God ﷺ lined them up behind him, then he prayed with us. When he finished, I said to him: ‘Who are these, O Messenger of God?’ He said: ‘These are jinn of Nasibin. They came to me disputing about matters between them, and they asked me for provisions, so I provisioned them.’ I said to him: ‘Do you have anything, O Messenger of God, to provision them with?’ He said: ‘I provisioned them with return (al-raj‘ah): whatever dung they find, they will find it as barley; whatever bone they find, they will find it covered with meat.’ At that, the Messenger of God ﷺ forbade cleansing oneself with dung and bone.”
